We are taught that information is power. But information is more than
power. Having information in hand means having an extra responsibility on one's
shoulders. As soon as any information comes into our hands, it becomes
associated with our behavior and decisions. It is important to think about how
we will use the information. Even a small piece of information can cause a big
accident, much like the butterfly effect.
Having some important information in hand means that by using the
information, people may harm someone, or may benefit someone.... If the
information is such that someone's honor is involved in the information, then
it is better to hide the information.
The teaching of Islam is also such that if you know someone's fault, you
have to hide it. If there is information that may be true but if you tell others,
it will only create chaos, it is better to hide it. It is better to avoid it.
Again, it may be that if some information is such that if the information is
revealed, someone's fault will be revealed, but it will benefit the common
people or many will be saved from danger. In this case, it is better to reveal
the information. If we look at it this way, we see that having information in
hand means deciding how we will use it.
But what is actually happening? By pressing the share button on social
media, we share the bad before the good. I have personally verified in many
ways that negative news or information is shared several times more than
positive news or information. So we do not have time to think whether someone
is embarrassed or whether someone's peace of mind is destroyed as a result of
this sharing.
It happens all the time that something indecent often come before our eyes,
because someone found art in indecent material and shared it. The person who
shares something like this has added someone to their friend list on social
media who may dislike it very much. People who come to social media for some
urgent reason become terribly annoyed with vulgar-obscene contents. If
something like these comes before eyes, not only does people lose focus on
work, but it also causes resentment and anger, which also affects work and
personal life. These vulgar-obscene issues drag people into time consuming
debates also.
Apart from this, I also observed that after knowing about someone's bedroom
news or personal incidents, someone posts that and that gets thousands of
shares in a few hours. Those who share these things probably never keep the
feelings of others in mind. Does anyone even think that by what right do people
violate the privacy of the person whose bedroom or personal news is being
shared?
The most annoying thing is sharing the statements of religion haters. Most
people in this country are religious. It is possible to anger the people of
this country very quickly about religion. Strangely, it seems that those who
are religious keep sharing the statements of religion haters day and night. Who
benefits from this at the end of the day? People, by being religious
themselves, share the statements of anti-religious people and create unrest
among many more religious people. It seems that religious people work as the
right hands of religious haters! Why do religious people need to share the
statements of religion haters? Why these information are being shared instead of
avoiding them?
It is important to think about these questions.
Again, in the past, if a sex scandal happened, it would be buried quietly,
but now when a scandal happens, it is beyond telling what an awkward act is
done by spreading it. In other words, such a situation is created that if
someone commits a mistake and repents, social media users are quite eager to
block the way for them to come back to the path of repentance.
It is a bit like when someone gets dirt accidentally on their feet while
walking on the street, instead of washing it off, they gather people and shout,
"Look, I got dirt on my feet!"
This strange mentality is definitely a disease. The cure for this disease
can be to understand that you should not spread any information as soon as you
get it. Because 'information is power' is a wrong statement. The correct
statement is 'information is responsibility'. So, we should be responsible with
information in hand.
